The The 9 RCF Knowledge Centres Enforcement are an initiative by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment in order to connect and strengthen the municipalities and enforcement partners in the domain of Work, Income and Care. The RCFs form a national network from which they connect, advise and support the municipalities and partners. The National Knowledge Centre Enforcement (LKC) is the newly formed "backoffice" for the RCFs.

I was involved in the requirement elicitation and design of a knowledge base concept to be used by LKC.

Tilburg Railyard Zone Concept Development Support

The Tilburg Spoorzone is a 75 hectare area in the centre of Tilburg which was recently acquired by the Municipality of Tilburg from Dutch Railways. This huge area must be transformed from a former rail maintenance yard into a vibrant "knowledge-driven city zone". Many stakeholders are involved in the very complex process of deciding what to with this area in terms of usage and urban development.

I was involved in the initial stage of the Concept Development Working Group, creating a discussion presentation for the kickoff of the working group and recording its progress in mindmaps.

In the Tilburg Social Innovation Lab (TiSIL), four institutions for Higher Education (Tilburg University, Avans University of Applied Sciences, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Breda University of Applied Sciences) join forces to make a visible contribution to the development of the region Midden-Brabant (Tilburg and surroundings) as the Region for Social Innovation. One of TiSIL's activities is the development of a methodology and tool for "innovative contract design.

I specified the requirements and design of the innovative contract design tool prototype.

Wetenschapsknooppunt Brabant is a regional science hub that aims to establish a sustainable collaboration between Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology and their partners in primary and secundary education.

I advise on the digital collaboration infrastructure required by the science hub, in particular the development of the Kinderkennisbank ("Kid's Knowledge Base"). This digital knowledge base contains basic learning materials to be used by children, teachers, parents and others in their science education activities.

Broadband4All in South Africa

Broadband4All is the outcome of a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Meraka Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Its objective is to bridge the digital divide and bring the social and economic benefits offered by broadband connectivity to rural communities in South Africa and other developing countries. The objective of the project is to offer broadband access to rural communities in an affordable and sustainable fashion.

I did a mid-term review of the project, including interviewing the researchers at CSIR and "village operators" on site.

Bijzondernemen (Entrepreneurial Skills for Kids)

The objective of the Bijzondernemen project, is to develop a (People/Planet/Profit) entrepreneurial attitude in primary school children and develop entrepreneurial teaching materials to be used in the curriculum.

Assigned by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, BKWI is developing Naleving.net, a "sectoral intranet" site for government organizations working on enforcement of social security. This intranet is a kind of "social knowledge base" in which professionals can exchange information and ask questions in a secure environment. Self-organizing communities of practice are an important building block in fostering use of and knowledge exchange on this network site.

I advised on the design of and setting up of these communities of practice within the network site.

Midpoint Brabant Social Innovation Awards

Midpoint Brabant is a network organization of partners that aims to promote social innovation as the engine of socio-economic development in the region of Midden-Brabant. In 2010 and 2011 the Social Innovation Award Midden-Brabant was awarded to regional organizations leading the way in implementing this concept in practice.

I coordinated the Social Innovation Award Academy in which the winners met to exchange experiences and helped the individual winners grow to the next level by performing socio-technical quickscans of their various cases.

Twente University Masterclass Web 2.0 and Social Media

Tilburg University Virtualisation Academic Services

Tilburg University Library & IT Services aimed to make the services provided to the faculties more tailored to user needs by the "virtualisation" of the academic services. This included the setting up of use cases around demand-driven service innovations.

I helped to formulate a vision and approach on service virtualisation and to set up the initial use cases.

Tilburg University Socio-Technical Quickscan of a Facilities Management System

Tilburg University Facility Services uses the Planon Facilities Management System to coordinate many different services, from mail delivery to building management. A better understanding of the very complex usage context of this system was needed by management.

I performed a socio-technical quickscan of the usage context of one Planon module. The quickscan included recommendations with respect to a clearer definition of the goals, roles, workflows and associated tools.

EU PEOPLE Policy Makers Conference

The Dutch Province of Noord-Brabant coordinated the EU PEOPLE - Innovation for Societal Change project in order to explore the opportunities for new forms of employment and for improving well-being and cohesion in the frame of the demographic and societal changes. To this purpose, they hosted a large policy makers conference in March 2010.

I advised on potential conference speakers and the use of social media to support the conference. I also helped set up a wiki containing a digital library of publications, including a tutorial to introduce novices to the most relevant social media in the context of the project.

Amsterdam E-Boekenstad Research Community of Practice

The Hogeschool van Amsterdam was in charge of the Amsterdam E-boekenstad consortium of educational institutes, publishers, and manufacturers investigating how e-readers can be used for e-learning and how to improve the e-books value chain.

Ministry Metadata Roadmap

The Brussels-based company Collibra helped the Flemish Ministy of Education improve their metadata management, using Collibra's business semantics software suite. Part of this effort was to create a metadata roadmap. On a foundation of state-of-the-art research insights, a metadata architecture & governance framework, and methodological approach were developed, as well as a planning of the necessary R&D projects to improve metadata management in the ministry.

Subcontracting for Collibra, I coordinated the creation of the roadmap.

ESSENCE (E-Science/Sensemaking/Climate Change) workshop

The Knowledge Media Institute was involved in the ESSENCE (E-Science/Sensemaking/Climate Change) research project. In 2009, KMi organized and hosted the first ESSENCE workshop on eScience, Sensemaking and Argumentation tools for climate change deliberation. This happened in collaboration with Global Sensemaking (GSm), a network formed in 2008 to develop human-centred computing tools to help tackling wicked problems such as Climate Change.

I co-organized the workshop and prepared a presentation on the socio-technical system represented by the ESSENCE community and its tools.

JurInfo Authoring Support System

The JurInfo online course was developed by TILT and used by various Dutch institutes of higher education. It teaches law students how to select information resources, develop a search strategy, and judge the search results for relevance and reliability.

I analyzed the collaborative workflows in which the online course is planned, edited, and published. I also advised on the (wiki, course authoring) tools to support the authoring process.

Blended Learning Methodology & System

This project created a blended learning environment for students working in law firms across the Netherlands while still taking courses at the Tilburg University Department of Social Law.

This project created a student portal through which Tilburg University students have personalized access to their most relevant applications and information resources. Besides the technical implementation of the portal in Blackboard, we created a portal community of stakeholders (students, information suppliers, technical developers) and an organizational process for requirements elicitation and portal development and maintenance.

As the project leader, I was responsible for the design and implementation of the student portal.

Data, Information, and Process Integration with Semantic Web Services (DIP)

Community-Driven Competence Ontology Engineering (CO-DRIVE)

The Leonardo Da Vinci CODRIVE (Competency Ontology driven Vocational Education) project aimed to contribute to a European standard for vocational competencies. To this purpose, a collaborative methodology and supporting tool infrastructure was developed that allows organizations to specify and reach agreement on their common inter-organizational ontologies.

I was the scientific coordinator for the development of the community-layer around the existing STAR Lab DOGMA ontology engineering methodology.

CoMa (Copyright Management)

The goal of the CoMa project was to provide information about scientific publishers' policies on institutional repositories (IRs), and to simplify the administration involved. It resulted in a knowledge bank with copyright regulations pertaining to IRs, linked to metadata on journals and articles from journals.

NEFETI-2 (Networked Enterprises)

PORT (Peirce Online Research Testbed)

The purpose of the PORT collaboratory project was to digitize, transcribe, annotate, and analyze the collected manuscripts of Charles S. Peirce located at Harvard University's Houghton Library. PORT's main foci were to develop a model collaboratory for distributed scholarly Peirce manuscript analysis, and to meta-model the testbed development process. Although the project ideas were not fully implemented, many of the ideas have been used by consortium partners in spin-off research projects.

I was involved as a researcher and co-author of several publications.

MEMO (Mediating & Monitoring Electronic Commerce)

The goal of the MEMO project was to prototype, demonstrate and evaluate a lightweight electronic commerce broker for the facilitation of electronic commerce applications that are of smaller-scale and more diverse than usual.

GRASS (Group Report Authoring Support System)

The goal of the GRASS project was to develop a system enabling stakeholders with at least partially opposed interests to produce focused group reports. Aim of these reports is to assess the degree of true consensus on contentious issues, such as environmental and social dilemmas. GRASS functionality is grounded in Habermas's theory of communicative action, but offers concrete collaborative authoring workflow support.

I was the principal investigator in this project and (co)author of a large number of related publications.

GRNSD (Global Research Network on Sustainable Development)

This project aimed to find innovative ways to apply then (1993-1994) new Internet technologies to facilitate worldwide research collaboration on sustainable development. The GRASS project is a direct descendant of this project.
